The Problems with Fact-Based Theories of Meaning
The relationship between a symbol with its purpose is called"the theory that explains meaning.. Within this post, we'll review the problems with truth-conditional theories of meaning, Grice's examination on speaker-meaning and Tarski's semantic theory of truth. Also, we will look at some arguments against Tarski's theory regarding truth.

Arguments against truth-based theories of meaning
Truth-conditional theories on meaning state that meaning is the result on the truthful conditions. This theory, however, limits understanding to the linguistic processes. He argues that truth-values do not always valid. Thus, we must be able discern between truth-values as opposed to a flat assertion.
The Epistemic Determination Argument attempts to prove the truthfulness of theories of meaning. It relies upon two fundamental principles: the completeness of nonlinguistic facts as well as understanding of the truth-condition. However, Daniel Cohnitz has argued against these premises. This argument therefore is not valid.
A common issue with these theories is the incredibility of meaning. However, this concern is dealt with by the mentalist approach. In this manner, meaning is assessed in terms of a mental representation, rather than the intended meaning. For example that a person may be able to have different meanings for the term when the same person uses the same term in 2 different situations, yet the meanings associated with those words may be the same regardless of whether the speaker is using the same word in both contexts.

While the majority of the theories that define meaning try to explain significance in regards to mental substance, other theories are often pursued. It could be due suspicion of mentalist theories. They could also be pursued through those who feel that mental representation must be examined in terms of the representation of language.
Another major defender of this idea A further defender Robert Brandom. This philosopher believes that significance of a sentence derived from its social context, and that speech acts in relation to a sentence are appropriate in the context in which they are used. He has therefore developed a pragmatics theory to explain the meanings of sentences based on the normative social practice and normative status.

Probleme with Grice's approach to speaker-meaning
Grice's analysis of speaker-meaning puts significant emphasis on the person who speaks's intention and its relation to the significance of the phrase. In his view, intention is an in-depth mental state that must be considered in order to grasp the meaning of the sentence. But, this argument violates speaker centrism by looking at U-meaning without M-intentions. Furthermore, Grice fails to account for the notion that M-intentions cannot be constrained to just two or one.
In addition, Grice's model isn't able to take into account important instances of intuitive communication. For instance, in the photograph example previously mentioned, the speaker does not clarify whether the person he's talking about is Bob as well as his spouse. This is problematic since Andy's photo does not reveal whether Bob or wife are unfaithful or faithful.
Although Grice believes that speaker-meaning has more significance than sentence-meanings, there is some debate to be had. In reality, the distinction is vital to the naturalistic recognition of nonnatural meaning. Indeed, the purpose of Grice's work is to offer naturalistic explanations that explain such a non-natural meaning.

To understand a communicative act you must know what the speaker is trying to convey, which is complex in its embedding of intentions and beliefs. Yet, we rarely make profound inferences concerning mental states in typical exchanges. Therefore, Grice's interpretation of speaker-meaning doesn't align with the real psychological processes that are involved in communication.
While Grice's story of speaker-meaning is a plausible description how the system works, it's but far from complete. Others, such as Bennett, Loar, and Schiffer, have created more precise explanations. However, these explanations tend to diminish the credibility to the Gricean theory, because they view communication as an intellectual activity. In essence, people believe that what a speaker is saying as they can discern what the speaker is trying to convey.
It does not account for all types of speech acts. Grice's approach fails to include the fact speech acts can be used to explain the significance of a sentence. In the end, the significance of a sentence is decreased to the meaning that the speaker has for it.

Problems with Tarski's semantic theory of truth
Although Tarski claimed that sentences are truth bearers however, this doesn't mean any sentence is always truthful. He instead attempted to define what is "true" in a specific context. His theory has become an integral part of modern logic and is classified as correspondence or deflationary theory.
One drawback with the theory to be true is that the concept cannot be applied to any natural language. The reason for this is Tarski's undefinability principle, which asserts that no bivalent languages can have its own true predicate. While English may seem to be an an exception to this rule and this may be the case, it does not contradict with Tarski's stance that natural languages are closed semantically.
However, Tarski leaves many implicit constraints on his theory. For example it is not allowed for a theory to contain false statements or instances of the form T. That is, the theory must be free of from the Liar paradox. Another issue with Tarski's concept is that it's not conforming to the ideas of traditional philosophers. Furthermore, it cannot explain each and every case of truth in the ordinary sense. This is one of the major problems for any theory of truth.

The second problem is that Tarski's definitions is based on notions from set theory and syntax. These are not appropriate for a discussion of infinite languages. Henkin's language style is based on sound reasoning, however this does not align with Tarski's definition of truth.
Truth as defined by Tarski is also an issue because it fails take into account the complexity of the truth. Truth for instance cannot be a predicate in an interpretive theory and Tarski's axioms do not explain the nature of primitives. Further, his definition on truth isn't compatible with the concept of truth in theory of meaning.
However, these concerns do not preclude Tarski from using this definition, and it is not a qualify as satisfying. In fact, the exact concept of truth is more clear and is dependent on specifics of the language of objects. If you're looking to know more, read Thoralf's 1919 work.

There are issues with Grice's interpretation of sentence-meaning
The problems with Grice's analysis of sentence meaning could be summed up in two major points. The first is that the motive of the speaker must be understood. Additionally, the speaker's speech must be supported with evidence that creates the intended effect. However, these conditions cannot be met in every instance.
This problem can be solved through a change in Grice's approach to sentence interpretation to reflect the meaning of sentences that do not have intentionality. This analysis is also based on the idea that sentences are highly complex and include a range of elements. Therefore, the Gricean analysis fails to recognize examples that are counterexamples.

This particular criticism is problematic when considering Grice's distinctions between meaning of the speaker and sentence. This distinction is essential to any naturalistically based account of the meaning of a sentence. This theory is also essential to the notion of conversational implicature. As early as 1957 Grice provided a basic theory of meaning that expanded upon in later publications. The principle idea behind meaning in Grice's study is to think about the speaker's intent in understanding what the speaker intends to convey.
Another issue with Grice's method of analysis is that it does not consider intuitive communication. For instance, in Grice's example, there is no clear understanding of what Andy believes when he states that Bob is not faithful to his wife. Yet, there are many cases of intuitive communications that are not explained by Grice's theory.

The main argument of Grice's research is that the speaker should intend to create an emotion in audiences. However, this argument isn't necessarily logically sound. Grice defines the cutoff on the basis of cognitional capacities that are contingent on the person who is the interlocutor as well the nature of communication.
Grice's interpretation of sentence meaning cannot be considered to be credible, although it's an interesting theory. Some researchers have offered deeper explanations of meaning, yet they are less plausible. Additionally, Grice views communication as an act of reasoning. Audiences make their own decisions by being aware of an individual's intention.
